Thursday 6 - stupid items in an emergency box

Our government wants us to have more and more items in the house so we can rely on ourselves in cases of emergency, like war, a digital attack etc.

I have commented on quite a lot, as they wanted us to have a lot of water in the house.
But we live below sea level here, in a polder. We don't have a car.
So when something is happening we probably have to leave our houses.
Won't be a pleasure with loads of water on our bicycle. And when there is a shortage they will be stolen from our hands and we can't do anything about it.

So which ridiculous items have we found on the boxes which are available to be bought?

  1. A battery radio...
which is nuts because batteries run out, people forget to exchange them, people forget to buy new batteries. Sunpanel radios do better when you are able to put them in the sun, handpressure radios won't give consistent sound, etc etc

  2. A flute which produces 120 db...
so that might damage your hearing.. when you won't get tinnitus, you will get deaf... but OK, the russians won't hear you running...when they are close enough to see you run.

  3. Saw a bag with chinese symbols...
You don't know what it says, and why pay for a bag when you probably have enough bags already so you'd better use your own bag, one you can crry or put on your bicycle.

  4. And what about a waterfilter that runs on electricity.
It's expected that electricity won't be available, so what to do with a waterfilter that needs to be plugged in?
I commented in the mail to the firm who sold it and they took it offline and out of the emergency box.

  5. A portable gas stove...
Yep... where do you find gas? There isn't even a can of gas in the emergency box... so... mail... removed!

  6. Carpenter's tools...
Yep. I think they just copied the content for an emergency box for people in Alaska...

  1. I had to look up the word "polder". It is not something we see here in the states, although where we live in Florida is pretty close to sea level, but thankfully where we are is fairly "high" so that flooding is not something that happens here often except for some street flooding when there are major storms like hurricanes. So where do you go when you have to evacuate? Are there places nearby that are on higher ground? Do they have shelters that can house a large number of people? Do you have to take your own food? I know it is always wise to be prepared for such events as mentioned, but I do hope you don't have to deal with those kinds of situations. but yes, we also try to maintain emergency supplies, usually in the case of a hurricane where the power will be out for a long period of time. Thankfully we have not had any long term outages since we have lived in this house. But still, we try to be prepared. Thank you for sharing these things with us. It helps us to remember that it's always better to be prepared than to be caught without the necessities.

    1. To get on higher grounds we have to go a few km, then up the bridge over the canal.
We have no large shelters, so I assume they will open schools and gym-halls.
Son2 lives on higher grounds. Not a large appartment, but large enough to sleep on the floor with a few people.
If things go wrong we need food, yes. But then we're talking about a nature disaster or a hole in the dyke by force. If it's the last I assume it won't be wise to go into town...which we have to as there is the higher ground.

Good to know you didn't have long outages.
It's unusual here, but in the past we've had some, lasting just a coupe of hours. Not enough to destroy the food in the freezer.

But now we rely on digital control we're far too vulnerable for all sorts of disturbances.
And with climate change we might get worse weather...
