About her diagnosis

I consider she didn't get a proper diagnosis.

PTSD and Anorexia can be diagnoses, but people can (re)act in such a way to challenges that behaviour, thoughts and/or emotions don't fit in these concepts.

That's why treatment has a good effect on some and have hardly any effects on others.
More is needed.

Often it is thought more treatment and/or medication is needed.

But I think a better and more thoughtful differential diagnosis is needed.

The first diagnoses are secondairy diagnoses.
To fully succeed in treatment of them, a better (primary) diagnosis is needed.
For instance: is a personality disorder dictating this person?

An easy example is a woman who was referred to me.
She had fallen from her bicycle.
Just a bump on her head, nothing serious.
Yet she kept a headache, and slowly more symptoms developed.
She had visited quite some doctors. They didn't find anything.
They were considering her irritation, lack of concentration, continuing pain and some more symptoms, which included loss of menstruation and persistent diarrhea.

So she had been at the GP, gyneacologist, the neurologist, doctors of internal medicine and gastroenterology, seen to establish allergies, and now it was my turn to see if her symptoms came from "between the ears", as we call it here.

I asked her to tell me everything that she could remember from months before the fall to this moment.
And I asked her about her life.
5 children, always busy, she was happy with how things went, until she got ill.

This was not a woman to ask attention from medical professionals.

We both decided to make another appointment.
I told her that the symptoms might be of a psychological origin, but that it also might be a brain issue.
So next time I would test for that. She agreed.

I found some brain issues.
Asked the neurologist to do a scan... told him what I thought.
He didn't want to do the scan.
So I asked him to sit down and listen.
Showed him my results, what I assumed.
And he, the magnifient neurologist had the opportunity to show me wrong...

He found a tumor at the place I pointed out.

I worry that my daughter is not getting the treatment she needs.
That they don't have the right insight into her problems and just have taken their theory book and work from there.

If they would look further, have a better assessment, they would also have the right path of treatment, both psychotherapeutic and medicinal.

  1. I hope the doctors and therapists will continue to seek a right diagnosis for your daughter and that she will receive the treatment that will be most beneficial for her. Keep fighting for her. Make them listen. Praying they will pay attention and not wait too long. (((hugs))) to you.
