Today is not a day to really celebrate.
Many women in the world are fighting for their existence: Gaza, Ukrain, Afghanistan and alot of women in other countries.
War, warcrimes and oppression, but also plain stupidity and male ego's are threatening women.
It makes me sad to see that the situation got worse the past year.
I am not a feminist.
But I do believe in equality.
Equality in value, but also equality in human rights.
Women are perfectly capable to make their own decisions, but the past year we have seen that the most important decisions are taken from many women.
Women are refused access to proper care because their doctors are afraid they will be prosecuted, because some males don't know the difference between
- the natural expulsion of a fetus because nature has decided something is wrong,
- the surgical removal of a fetus that is either not viable or
- lives in a body that is not able to deal with the process of pregnancy because itself is ill,
- the termination of pregnancy because the pregnancy is a result of rape,
- the termination of pregnancy because a woman can't cope with a baby for psychological, physical or social reasons
- the termination of pregnancy as a way of birth control.
Women are still not treated as equals.
Even in my country women are paid less when having equal education and abilities.
I am a scientist, and even last year I sensed some men think a woman is not able to function at their level.
It's always nice to act in a normal way and then suddenly confront them with my knowledge and experience, which is often a bit more as I am older...
I know that in a situation of equality I don't have to proof myself, because there will be natural mutual respect.
I also know that during the past years I have chosen for the confrontation more than ever before.
It's not that I want to be better, I want to be accepted for the person I have become during all those years of personal development and studying.
It feels like I am educating them... teaching a part they haven been taught at home or during life.
This year the day will be celebrated at university with a whole day of interesting lectures, discussions and other sessions. And in town there will be all sorts of activities, ranging from singing and theatre to cycling.
It feels like they have forgotten there are women who have to watch the kids, take care of the ill, and are otherwise not able to leave the house.
Interesting.
