Taping feet

Sometimes it's difficult to translate professions, because there are important differences.

Take "Midwife".
I many countries it's a specialised nurse, working in hospital under the supervision of an obstetrician.
Here in The Netherlands the Midwifery School is a direct entry school, and leads to a Bachelor of Science in 4 years.
After that one is a registered midwife, able to have an independent practice. Area of work is the healthy pregnant mother and aftercare, home deliveries and/or hospital deliveries, and emergency deliveries. A midwife has special knowledge to discriminate between regular and problem pregnancies, deliveries, and baby health, so she can refer to the obstetrician or neonatologist, if needed. It's an inependent profession which can be advanced to Master of Midwifery.

The past week I have been looking into the translation of podotherapist and I thought podiatrist would be a good translation. It's not.
In many countries the podiatrist is a foot doctor. Doing surgery, repositions etc. But also toe nail clipping.
Here that is a specialized orthopedic surgeon. The toenail clipping is for the pedicure.
The podotherapist here doesn't do repositions, nor surgery.
He is fully specialized in physiotherapy of the foot, footdiseases, and problems with posture, muscles and tendons which are a result of foot problems. So he makes insoles too.

So yesterday I went to the podotherapist.
I will get new insoles, as expected. With a correction for the change in footposition as a result of the surgery.
He immediately saw my foot was turned inward and he agreed I should have had a nightbrace.
He advices taping the foot in the right position before sleep.
The pain and swelling above my toes might indeed have been caused by a broken bone there. So he refrained form all manipulations of the foot until that special pain is gone, and the bone at the left of the foot is fully healed.

He also saw I was walking not straight up.

When I came home I was very tired.

The physiotherapist took it from there.
We talked about the pain I had experienced after the last exercise and she was happy I stopped doing the exercises.
We took treatment a bit back and I got exercises  for the next days with a very intense instruction. She can understand I am eager to walk and move around. But I should be very careful.
No camping in March, but I already decided that.
I'm sorry for my english friend, but it's no use paying a lot of money for a hotel and then sitting all day at the restaurant at the airfield, because the path to the hanger is not fot for wheelchairs.

The taped my feet. The healthy one to limit it's activities and provide a better posture, the other to mould the bones in a good position.. also during the night.

Again we had a lot of fun.
Lucky she didn't tape my mouth!!

  1. It sounds like you are getting good care from these two professionals. I pray the taping will help get your feet better aligned and also help you begin walking normally again...one step at a time! I am sorry you will have to miss the camping trip, etc., but hopefully there will be other opportunities in the future when you are well. I'm glad this was a better day, even if a bit tiring. Progress is being made.
