thursday 13 - fighting high temperatures in a natural way.

We're experiencing the hottest july on earth.
At the same time our electricity is not enough to keep all facturies running.
So air cconditioning is only adding to the problems we experience as part of climate change.
But we can do all sorts of things.

  1. open windows in the early morning and late evening to create a draft in the house. Close them during the aother times of the day.
  2. get the tiles out of your garden and plants trees. Consider sharing trees with your neighbours. Fruittrees might even bring you more joy than shadow.
  3. create a veranda on the side of the house that has no sun in the afternoon, so you can sit outside.
  4. Insulate walls with wood fibers.
  5. Put windows in the shadow.. of trees, of the roof, of shutters, etc.
  6. Create shutters outside or inside. Make them with a dark and a light side. Hang them in such a way that you can turn the white side to the sun during summer and the dark side in the winter.
  7. Have the entrance in the shadow.. or use a different entrance in the morning and afternoon.
  8. heat pumps can also cool. But often condensation in the building is a consequence. Carpets soak up the moisture and get moldy. So instead of a cooling heat pump, use stone floors or vinyl or parquet.
  9. If you have a chimney you can create a system that many asian houses have. They have an open air space in the middle of the house. The wind blows cool air into it, and the hot air gets out. (A simplification, but it makes clear how it works). They have a waterbassin at the bottom to cool the air even more.
  10. Create a fabric roof above your back door. It prevents the sun from heating the wall.
  11. Consider changing the use of room sin the house. Cooling ventilation through open windows during the afternoon: sitting room.
  12. Use a dehumidifier. With less moisture in the air your skin can breathe better.
  13. When you have a basement, consider onstructing the inlet of your air in such a way that it goes through the cool (lower) area of the house before it goes up into the living rooms.

  2. Those are some good ideas. I'm partial to my ceiling fan. It gives me a great breeze all day.

    1. I can imagine.
We're not used to those high temperatures, so ceiling fans can hardly be found here.
