Tuesday 4 - Saint Patrick

Saint Patrick

  1. Do you celebrate the day and is it more secular or religious for you?

No. We don't celebrate it at all.

  2. Americans eat corned beef and cabbage but it's not traditional in Ireland at all.   In my  house its Colcannon and Beef Stew or Cottage pie (shepherds pie made with beef instead of lamb).. which is more realistic and far less salty.  Do you make special meals for holidays?  What will you make for St. Patrick's Day?

The former generation made special meals:
    - clear soup
    - potatoes, vegetable and some meat
    - dessert, mainly peaches from a can
    - coffee for the grown ups

We don't make special meals anymore. We just ask what everyone likes.
If we have the money we have a special dessert.

  3. Do you have much green in your wardrobe? Does the color look good on you?

No. Green makes me look pale.
I needed a green shirt in the bagpipe band and it looked awful on me. So I had to use make up to make me look a bit normal.

But I have green socks!! Christmas socks.

  4. In school we put up giant green shamrocks and Leprechauns. We made green paper chains to decorate our classrooms.  What do you do to decorate?

Nothing, as we don't celebrate it.

    Apart from that.

With 4 autistic boys it was no fun decorating the room, because it made them feel not at home, but in strange surroundings.
I used to have a lot of problems with them during the "decorated days" and I didn't know why.
They were too small to tell me.
I saw similar behaviour when I was away with them, visiting other mothers they knew well, and I suddenly realized it might be the decoration. So one evening I took it away and the next morning they were fine.

It made me evaluate the habit of puting things at the same place. So gradually I made my coffeetable a bit of a mess, with one or two familar objects in the middle. It resulted in them getting used to it and I could put something down without one or more of them getting upset. (Didn't waant the christmasdecorations up all year...)

  1. Hi Syl, good that you learned what was best for your boys. I loved eating canned peaches, but I have to watch my sugar intake now.

  2. The more I get to know you, the more I appreciate you and the wisdom you have learned throughout the years because of what you have lived through. Thank you for sharing these things with us. I am learning from you because I haven't experienced the same things as you have. Oh, I love canned peaches, by the way! And so did my father. We often had canned peaches for a dessert...but he liked having a couple of cookies alongside. LOL. Have a blessed and wonderful week.

    1. Thank you very much. It's something I can do: sharing. And if it means meeting kind people like you it's even more a pleasure.
Your father was a wise man...cookies along would have made the peachs even better!!

  3. Green makes me look washed out too because my skin tone is blonde/gray. I do better with darker colors.
St. Patty's is an anniversary of sorts for me and the Hub's. Our First Date was 44 years ago and we always celebrate it. God has blessed me beyond measure and more than I deserve.
We've been eating Keto (low sugar/carb's) for over 3 years. Gave up the sugar rushes. I sure feel better, lost a lot of weight, hair grew back, blood sugar is normal, etc. It's great but I do miss a bowl of ice cream now and then. Yum.
    Blessings. xx

    1. Oh wow!!! That is a festive anniversary! Congratulations!
I am not allowed to eat keto. It can cause kidney stones and with my kidneyproblems... And I have problems with vitamin uptake. Keto makes it a lot worse. Add to it the heartrisks...

A friend is doing the keto diet too. Is very thin now. Feels very energetic. But I think you'll recognise that. There is keto ice cream, and you can find recipes online. Very easy to make. You probably have the ingredients at home. I've had a taste and it tasted well.

      Blessings

  4. Interesting what you learned about autism. What a challenge you had! I think St. Patrcks day is big in America because there are somewhere near 100 million of Irish decent here.

  5. I had a little girl that was acting a little off at Christmas we think because of the Elf on the Shelf that visited our classroom during that time. I am glad you were able to figure that out for your boys! Loved your answers! Have a nice week.
