Tuesday 4

  1. What are the most memorable destinations you've visited, and what made them stand out? (this could include places like museums, art galleries, etc. not only a vacation site.)

The Grossglockner. On top of a mountain, looking out over the glacier.....

A still unknown castle at the coast of Wales. Where I felt like I was in the time of centuries ago. Standing there in the wind, overlooking the waters, knowing at the other side, somewhere behind the horizon, was Ireland.

The tunnels of Dover. We were the only ones visiting at the time. No artificial light effects or sound effects. Just a walk with another militairy daughter, Caroline. Feeling the athmosphere of how it was....

So many places in Germany and England.

  2. Which hidden gem locations have you explored that you'd recommend to others ?

I have another recommendation, knowing that most participants of this meme are american.
Don't rush, don't think that a look at tourist attractions and adding the names on the list, will enrich your life.

Take the time somewhere, blend in... My best times were in London, taking the Underground after I decided how many times I would step in another train and at the how maniest stop.
One day I landed at London Bridge station. Walked around a bit. It was a hot summer's day. So I sat down at a bench in Potters Fields Park, in the shade of a tree. I looked at the Tower Bridge... enjoyed it... and then I started to look around and it was great to see how parents dealt with their children. How the children played. People came from the offices in their neat suits. A little boy suddenly saw his father and his joy made everyone around get a smile.
I got a sweet offered by Japanese people who hardly could speak English....
After a while I decided to walk around and landed in a street with students, and we got to talk, have a drink, and exhanged ways of dealing with students in both our countries. A year later one of them came to my town and attended a few courses and I could help her with finding a room to stay.
Each time I see the Tower Bridge I smile, because it's not a picture in my photobook, but because it got a personal meaning.

  3. What’s the most unique cultural experience you’ve had while traveling ?

I don't know at the moment. Still thinking.

  4. What mode of transportation is your favorite for a long trip? How about a short trip?

I love flying, but that also means long travels to and fro airfields.
The train is great too. The railwaystation is not to far away. In Rotterdam I take the Eurostar and I'll arrive after about 4 hours rather near my favorite hotel in London.
    Magnificent.

  1. I still have to travel to Great Britain but there is much to try and see. I love what I've seen of it on television and film.

  2. Those sound like great places. I'd love to visit England. When we travel we don't always like to see the "touristy " things. We like to ask the locals what they enjoy seeing, doing and eating.
