This year it's 80 years ago that The Netherlands was liberated by allied forces after 5 years of oppression by the Nazis.
Of the 9 million inhibitants between 225.000 and 280.000 people were killed. But there are also numbers that are higher.(301.000) Among them were140.000 Jewish people at the start of the war. 101.800 of them died. That means that 73% of the Jewish people didn't survive WW2. About 17.000 military died (This number is probably higher as quite some men escaped to England and served there under the British Ministery of Defense.).
The end of war started in the south, but the liberation stopped at the large rivers (A bridge too far). That meant that my city was front city, and that the north suffered a long winter of famine. (The hungerwinter). Especially the western part of the country suffered from hunger, because the east was less densily populated and there were more farms.(So at places a bit of food could be found hidden under the bushes that lined the fields or hidden food was exchanged for jewelry or given to those in need.)
About 20.000 people died because of hunger during the last winter of war.
At the end of April the allied forces started dropping food.

My father took part in the food droppings, he told me. The photo in the article shows men preparing the plane. The man at the right might be my father.
To commemorate the food droppings buns are dropped in the fields where they used to be dropped in WW2.
That's what you see.
Wow, how exciting! Who was this? Friends of yours? Where are they dropping food, and why? Very interesting!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this update with the information about this! Very interesting, and especially so because your father participated in this back then! Wow! I learned something new here that I didn't know anything about, since I know very little of Dutch history. Now I see why this is so significant for you especially! Wow, this really is amazing! Thank you!
