Auschwitz has become a symbol.
Today I heard quite some speeches about the time.
About the attrocities.
At times I got the feeling that it was only about the Jewish people. I think that after writing the speeches there was someone with a correction pen adding to it: "and others".
Many linked the killing of the Jewish people to the 7th of october.
"They did it again!"
"Look, they are against us without any reason."
And then they kept on talking about the innocent children that were murdered for being Jewish.
About the killing of women because they were Jewish,
About the killing of the elderly Jewish people...
And I felt for them. Like I have always done.
But today I felt shocked.
Because that was as far as thoughts went.
People kept in concentration camps with barbed wires, guns, hunger, lack of medical care, seeing family and friends disappear and never come back.
In my mind I saw the people in Gaza.
Imprisoned in their own country.
Hospitals bombed, hunger, constant bombing.
Being driven to socalled safe places, expecting the bombs to fall there too.
A country smashed to pieces, people seeing family members disappear and never come back.
Innocent children killed, because they were born there.
Innocent women killed, because they just lived there.
The elderly killed, because they had nowhere to go.
Do I feel less for the Jewish people that were killed in WW2, or survived? No.
But I do think that we always have to be honest to ourselves and see the innocent, regardless of their country, religion, or even a terrorist group in their country they have no part in and can't control.
To only see WW2, to only see october the 7th, is not understanding how cruel humanity can be.
It's also taking sides without understanding that history can change and times change too.
80 years ago the Russians freed Auschwitz, and they were praised for it.
Just a few years ago they attacked Ukrain...for being Ukrain...
The victim, the hero, can become an aggressor and can kill innocent children too.
