Would you forget your skateboard
put your phone aside
say goodbye to your family and friends
and leave for war?

Would you be aware
that your input
would be required
that you needed to serve
for the greater good?

Would you be prepared
to leave your country
and fight for your life
on the shores of another land?

Would you be able
to witness your friends die
and forever see that in your sleep?

Would you be able
to kill against God's will
the enemy:
a boy or girl you've never met?

Would you be able
to stand on trembling feet
when you are old and death is near
beside the names who fought with you
only for the flag moving in the wind to hear?


When silence drifts over the seas
taking all your memories
laying them in the hands of youth
to cherrish and to keep

Would you be able
to keep our freedom safe
and hold peace between peoples
to the utmost height
Would you understand
a veteran's sigh?


Then stand with me
just for a moment
and tell what others did for you and me
and keep our peace and keep us free. .
